All five botanicals, the blend total as labelled, and an honest account of what the evidence does and does not support.
Five plants, each here for a stated reason. Where that reason is tradition rather than clinical proof, we say tradition — and where a claim would need a dose this blend does not carry, we say that too.
BreathiZen contains five named botanicals inside a 154 mg proprietary blend: mullein leaf extract 10:1, ginger root extract, bromelain powder, organic lemon extract and organic Cordyceps militaris. Our label prints the blend total rather than a per-plant split, and so do we. No caffeine, no stimulants.
BreathiZen is a dietary supplement for adults aged 18 and over. It is swallowed, not inhaled — nothing in the bottle enters your airway or lungs. It is not a bronchodilator and must never replace a rescue inhaler, controller medication or oxygen therapy, and it is not a treatment for asthma, COPD, bronchitis, emphysema or any respiratory infection. Ginger and bromelain can both affect blood clotting — speak to your prescriber first if you take an anticoagulant, and stop at least two weeks before scheduled surgery. Contains bromelain from pineapple stem. Not intended during pregnancy or nursing.
| Botanical | Why it is in there | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Mullein Leaf Extract Verbascum thapsus, 10:1 extract | Traditional respiratory botanical | Traditional use, strong chemistry, no controlled human trial |
| Ginger Root Extract Zingiber officinale | Best-researched plant in the blend | Laboratory airway data, no human breathing trial |
| Bromelain Powder from pineapple stem | Enzyme complex | Studied at far higher doses; no airway-route claim made here |
| Organic Lemon Extract Citrus limon | Flavour, finish and antioxidant plant compounds | Dietary research does not transfer to an extract; included for finish |
| Organic Cordyceps militaris fruiting body | Traditional vitality mushroom | Small, inconsistent human research; species named deliberately |
Our label states a 154 mg proprietary botanical blend and does not print a per-plant milligram split. So that is exactly what we print: the blend total, as labelled.
We will not publish a breakdown we cannot show you on the panel. And we will not borrow research conducted at far higher single-ingredient doses to imply this blend delivers them — bromelain research, for instance, uses doses in the hundreds of milligrams, which is more than this entire blend weighs. Knowing that is more useful to you than a confident-sounding table we made up, and it is the kind of arithmetic worth doing on any proprietary blend you are offered.
The BreathiZen discount is applied by supply size: $79 a bottle for two, $69 for three, $49 for six, with free US shipping on the larger packs.

Role: Traditional respiratory botanical · Evidence: Traditional use, strong chemistry, no controlled human trial
Why mullein leads our formula. Mullein is the plant most consistently associated with the chest across unconnected herbal traditions — European, Turkish and Native American practice all arrived at it independently.
Mullein leaf carries saponins, verbascoside, flavonoids and iridoid glycosides, several of which show antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in laboratory work. We use a 10:1 extract, meaning ten parts leaf concentrated into one part extract. We will also be straight with you about the limit: what exists for mullein is centuries of documented traditional use plus chemistry done in dishes. A controlled human trial with a cough or sputum endpoint is not there. That earns mullein its place at the front of a traditional botanical formula. It does not earn the phrase “clinically proven”, and you will not find us using it.
Role: Best-researched plant in the blend · Evidence: Laboratory airway data, no human breathing trial
The one with real airway laboratory data. Ginger has the most genuine airway research of any common kitchen botanical — and the most important caveat, which we would rather explain than skip.
Researchers have contracted strips of human airway smooth muscle and applied food-grade ginger, and the tissue relaxed in a dose-dependent way, with 6-gingerol, 8-gingerol and 6-shogaol identified as the active constituents. That is a real published finding. Here is where it stops: those were isolated tissue strips bathed directly in purified compound at controlled concentrations — not people swallowing a supplement. No clinical trial has yet shown that oral ginger improves breathing outcomes in humans. Ginger also has the clearest safety note in our formula, and it is on this page for that reason as much as any other.
Role: Enzyme complex · Evidence: Studied at far higher doses; no airway-route claim made here
What bromelain is, and what we will not say about it. Bromelain is a protein-digesting enzyme complex from pineapple stem. We include it as a traditional companion in this formula — not as a mucus treatment.
You will find pages claiming bromelain dissolves mucus and clears congestion. We do not make that claim, for a reason worth understanding: a swallowed liquid goes to your stomach, where digestive enzymes act on it, and it does not arrive at the mucus lining your airway. The bromelain research that does exist uses doses in the hundreds of milligrams, well above what any 154 mg blend can carry. We list it because it is on our label and you deserve to know what is in the bottle.
Role: Flavour, finish and antioxidant plant compounds · Evidence: Dietary research does not transfer to an extract; included for finish
Here for taste, and we would rather say so. Lemon gives the formula a clean, bright finish. That matters more than it sounds for something you are meant to take every morning for months.
There is a genuine body of research connecting dietary vitamin C intake to slightly stronger lung function readings across large populations. We are not going to borrow it. Those studies measured years of eating fruit and vegetables, not a splash of citrus extract in a dropper bottle, and stretching that literature to sell lemon would be exactly the kind of overreach this page exists to avoid. Lemon earns its place for a plainer reason: a daily habit you enjoy is a daily habit you keep, and consistency is the only way a gradual routine gets a fair test.
Role: Traditional vitality mushroom · Evidence: Small, inconsistent human research; species named deliberately
Which species, and why that matters. Ours is Cordyceps militaris, the cultivated species — not Cordyceps sinensis, which is a different organism that other pages sometimes substitute.
Cordyceps has a long traditional association with stamina and breathing capacity, and a small modern research base: a handful of human studies across a few hundred participants, with limited and inconsistent results. We name the species because the two are not interchangeable and a label that says only “cordyceps” is telling you less than it appears to. What we will not claim is that it increases lung capacity or blood oxygenation — those are exactly the claims the evidence does not currently support.
Ginger and bromelain can both affect blood clotting. If you take warfarin or another anticoagulant, speak to your prescriber before your first dose and stop at least two weeks before any scheduled surgery. Our bromelain is derived from pineapple stem, so this formula is not suitable for anyone with a pineapple allergy. We place this above our pricing on every page rather than below it.
